Ok, thanks for all your opinions and suggestions! :-)
I did an local Joomla 1.0.12 install on my machine and set up some content to play arround with and to check limits of Joomla. The good news: The limit seems to be far away ;-)

For my planned user subscriptions I installed AEC -- Account Expiration Component. But I couldn't get it to work (issues with . Anyone here to help me out? Or is anyone working with JCS -- JContentSubscription-Extension?
Perhaps there is a different solution that I've been missed?

I'd definetly give a try to Drupal, and there's a huge community that supports it.

second this.
Tried joomla but it's too 'joomlicated' for me, meaning you need to learn a whole load of joomla specific stuff which is pretty useless for anything else but joomla.
Great if you wish to stick with joomla & nothing else but time consuming & pretty redundant if you want to keep your options 'open' & learn stuff that can be used in many aspect s of web design.
Drupal is pretty interesting as it is well developed & luckily (best of all) really is 'open source, unlike joomla which has turned towards the commercial side of things.
Drupal can be easy or as complicated as you wish.
6 is out now but if you need to add on many things, go for 5.7.

I have tested a many cms, launch several sites on mambo/joomla, and substitute it for Drupal - (imho) more flexible engine.
