Software for Video Compositing?

I saw a BTS special by the people who created the show Walking with Dinosaurs. Where they put markers on trees to help create alpha masks so the dinosaurs could interact with the scenery.
Is there a software program that can do that?

Making mattes by hand is grueling.

In some cases you can track your masks and then tweak them as needed

I've tried AE, Shake, Fusion and Nuke... and chose Nuke. The most powerful tool for integrating with 3D and compositing, I think. The second place - Fusion.

Monet is fabulous for that but I will push for Fusion or shake because they are industry standard. I love monet but never see it in Job requirements.

shake is very good....so are others like D2, Fusion. But its the man behind these machines what matters most.

For Motion Graphics After Effects is the Best, but for highend 3D compositing Shake/Fusion is a better choice.
