I prefer Vegas because it have very handy interface and for music clips I can very precisely fit live video to sound from CD (by cutting and stretching with accuracy up to 100 frames per second).

Well, Avid Media Composer is the top choice of production houses, if you want to start in to the editing world I really recoment something basic till you get familiar the concepts and formats. Start with Windows Movie Maker and then choose Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, one you know how to work on these pieces of software then you can jump to the master of the masters AVID MEDIA COMPOSER, by the way, Avid has a really cool option to edit, is called Script Editing, do a little Google research and you will find out that this tool is just awesome for music videos, documentaries, Filmns, etc.
