20% of 1 core , or 20% of all four cores ?

i think ive attached a pik of mine 3draj.(not sure if attacment is gonna work)

In AE cs3 , a comp with a fast rotating white solid, motion blur on that layer.

My dual core cpu usage goes to 100 %

In th pik you can see my task manager is set to display a seperate graph for each core.

By the way, did you upgrade just your cpu ?
IE are you using the same windows instlation that you had when running a single core cpu ?

Is there some app that you see DOES use all four cores ?

If thats the case, are you sure what your doing in AE is stressful enuff to warrent it using more than 1 core. ?

Im not sure what stresses it most, 3d layers maybe, or a major plugin like tsunami perhaps.

its uses 20 % of all cores..so ideally only 1 core being used...and with that spped it takes 20 minutes to render my comp...so techinaclly speaking if it had used all other 3 cores too..it would have come to around 5 mins..so thats what frustating me...and ya my 3ds max and maya uses all cores..only its an issue with premier cs3 and aftereffects cs3...
and its my new pc...
and can u send me the link for th3 tsunami plugin please....
thanks for replying bro..
regards.raj:)

ok....uploading tsunami .

OK from a few smll tests i see the following.

Diferent effects/plugins multhread better than others.
3d layers with lights 70-80 %
gassean blur 60%--70%
tsuanmi water 50%(ie none..not multithreaded, can see this as its 50% constant, never over 50)
motion blur on a solid 80%-98%
plain render ie some footage re rendered - 40-54%
this is with AE mult threading setting off. Ie its rendering one frame at a time. I have it set to this cos i have only 2 gig ram. I will try it later with it on.

3DRAJ, can i suggest you test with a fast spining solid with motion on, and see what cpu usage you get from that.

If yours is peaking at 20% , thats not even 1 core to the max , so why would it utalize your other cores ?

If 1 core isnt maxed out to 100% , and your render ing 1 frame at a time, the bottleneck is hard drive thruput. So depending on what your doing exactly you may be able to improve that . IE are you making ae or prem read an avi, and write an avi from and to the same hardrive, this is not fast , the heads on the drive have to keep going back and forewards first to read then write in theory.
This is why some swear on having a seperate drive as a scratch disk in prem, etc. ;--read from 1 write to another simutainiously.

Remeber that hard drive thru put drops across the disk. Ie the write speed on an empty drive maybe be 90mb a secound , but on a nearly full hard drive it maybe as low as 40 mb a secound. Yes ! its incredible eh most drop below 50%.

Also are the drives that you are reading and writing on having wndows installed on ? And is this same drive holding windows page file ?. Im sure you get what im talking about.

Simple answer 3draj. Because neither AE CS3 or Premiere CS3 are fully optimized for multi-core CPUs.
