Thumbs up Tips to make ur pc work faster for using gfx applications!!!!

there r loads tips to follow to keep ur pc to the mark...
will name some important ones....

-Clean ur prefetch folder in windows every 1 months.

-Clean ur temp folder in windows every 1 month.

-Clean C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp

(administartor may vary.it may be at the name of the user too,so check that.
(this folder contains all unwanted files which was saved when u loaded some software)

-and lastly to make ur harddisk life more and to work it and react faster
off tht indexing services which by default is on for all your drives.....
right click on ur harddrives,
go to properties
and in the bottom there is a tab sayin allow indexing service to index the disk for fast file searching..
just uncheck it and select all subfolers

-Off all those visual goodies that come in with windows xp(saves ur precious ram)

-Page file too helps u when done.it acts as second memory.so if some application needs more ram,it leans on to the pagefile..
so on the pagefile...

-see to it that the data and os r on diffrent drives if possible....and leave as much space as empty in ur c drve(that is windows drive)...

-Deframent your drives every 2 weeks or so with a good defragmentor.it helps.

-off ur screensaver and no background.
thats it..

and after doing all this....
u will find some pace in ur pc's working..
do let me no ur experiences..
doing all this for last 1 year or so...
so go ahead..
cheers.raj

Great points!

Heres another little tid bit to add here:

When using Photoshop, be sure to keep your Photoshop Scratch Disk, and your Windows Page File on seperate disks. This way, if your computer needs extra ram (god forbid), if won't be competing with Photoshop's Scratch Disk.

You can do this by installing Photoshop to a different disk, or by changing the disk that Windows uses for its paging file. You can change the paging file disk by going to Start/Control Panel (Windows XP), and then going to the System Icon, and double click. Once there, click the Advanced tab, and then click on Settings under the Performance group. In the Performance Dialog Box, click the Advanced tab, and where it says Virtual Memory, click the Change button. Once there, simply change the size and drive, and you're good to go.

Once done, Photoshop and Windows should play nice. Though we all know Windows is the Special Ed brother here :)

Hope this helps!

Oh poops! I forgot to mention also, make sure that your hard drive is properly mounted, and ventilated. Heat and dust will kill a HD faster than over use. Plus, make sure all your BIOS and drivers are all up to date. If all else fails, add more ram!!!

I agree about the HD mounting. I can't stress enough the importance of proper airflow. Go crazy with some zip ties. Make sure dust isn't collecting ANYWHERE in your machine.

This is very true...

I just blew up my motherboard and damaged the CPU

Thick layer of dust collected in the CPU heatsink and the surrounding area of the CPU, because I usually i left open my computer case in order to lower the temperature inside...

But instead of lowering down the temperature, the collected dust blocked the airflow to CPU and caused overheating on CPU and motherboard...

Warning:

In my Windows\prefetch folder there is a file called Layout. This file is updated very often.
When I emptied the prefetch folder completely, a while ago, my pc froze at the next startup and I had to install Windows again.
Since then I empty the prefetch folder without deleting the Layout file.

I don't know why the Layout file is in the prefetch folder but it seems to be, at least for my computer, important.
