Hi terran1 =)

Yes you can!

The only thing you need to make sure is that the pdf you want to mark up
is allowed to be edited.

If the pdf is protected (not allowing changes to be made) you won't be
able to use Acrobat's Comment & Markup tools.

Try this;

1. Open the pdf and go to the page showing the text you want to highlight
then click the "Comment & Markup" task button (see Comment&Markup.gif).
(If it's not showing, enable it by checking it in the menu "View > Task Buttons)

Note: if the "Comment & Markup" tool is grayed out it means the pdf is
protected and can not be edited.

2. Once clicked the floating "Commenting" toolbar will appear to let you quickly
access the various commenting and markup tools (see HilighterTool.gif).
Click the "Highlighter Tool" button.

3. Now just drag the mouse cursor over the words or sentences you want to markup.
And, remember to save the pdf after you've marked it so your marks are saved too!!

I hope this helps =)

Let us know how it goes.

Nice reply Starry - for those pdf files which are password protected you can use the following - I have never used it but have heard good reports

Advanced PDF Password Recovery

This program allows to decrypt protected Adobe Acrobat PDF files, which have 'user' and/or 'owner' passwords set, preventing the file from opening or editing, printing, selecting text and graphics etc. If only 'owner' password is set, password recovery is not needed at all, but the file is being decrypted instantly (so all restrictions are being removed). 'User' password can be recovered using brute-force and dictionary attacks, or instantly from 'Owner' password; also, the program supports 'key attack' that allows to decrypt PDF files with 40-bit encryption redardless the password length, guaranteed.

Thanks for the tip VeeJay! =)

Here's an app I've had great success in using to remove protection from pdf files:
Code:
PDF Password Remover v.2.5 (Full)
