Well here's a vexing problem!

If you select "photometric light" from the lighting tab and then modify it, you're presented with a list of pre-defined templates.

Now I have found out where they write the code for the templates to appear but as there are thousands of luminaires out there it's not practical to write a template and then manually write the light details in the script!

So you clever people, what all of us could benefit from is some way of dropping all the ies files into a piece of software that picks the category, reads the data and spits it out as MaxScript template files to just pick and choose from the photometric modifier.

Must be easy for a MaxScript programmer - or a relational database person!

Anyone got an automated way of doing this?

If not, if anyone fancies writing such a proggy they'll no doubt earn everyone's undying gratitude, and know that they'll probably make pots of money when Discreet buys their code from them!

Get writing.

Marta

lol... no answer huh. well, I think it is hard enough to learn max. the maxscripters seem to have some other home and I guess those are not really many people.

I have all those iesfiles cathegorized in one folder if I remember right and they all have been named the way they are named in reality... those are ERCO ies... damn old stuff... I just worked once with the ies when creating a lighting scene for a museum to simulate the real situation and never ever since I used them, so I will not be helpful I guess. But when I have come to use maxscript myself ( I hope that will be before my 60th roflmao) I will let you know ok?

You could try to post a message in the maxscript part of the 3ds max forum at CGTalk, I had an issue with a script I was working on once (I'm not good enough to make what you need myself) and I was surprise by how helpful people were (even the great Bobo himself came to the rescue) So, worth a try :)
