1. Make sure you have installed the correct version of mental ray for Maya Satellite one the client machines. Run "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\mentalraysatellite8.0\bin\raysat80. exe" -v to confirm. It should be 3.5.1.2 for Maya 8.0 (3.6 for 2008)
2. Reboot the client machines after installation to make sure the service is available and ready.
3. Turn off any firewalls on the Master AND Client machines or configure the exceptions in your firewall software (recommended). mental ray for Maya 8.0 Satellite uses the TCP/IP port 7105. (7107 maya2008)
4. The maya.rayhosts file can be saved to different locations but using the users home directory is generally the easiest
Windowsv C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME
Mac
Users/USERNAME
Linux
/u/USERNAME or
/user/USERNAME
5. Ensure that the maya.rayhosts file has the hostnames of the client machines as well as the port # ie
render1:7105 (7107 maya2008)
render2:7105 (7107 maya2008)
6. Make sure that the maya.rayhosts file doesn't have a.txt file extension at the end. If it does it won't be found. Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab. Make sure Hide file extensions for known file types is turned OFF
7. Remember that the license for mental ray for Maya is per CPU, not per machine. So 1 machine with a single CPU is 1 license, 1 machine with dual (2) CPU's is 2 licenses. Complete can connect to 2 Satellite CPU's, Unlimited can connect to 8. If you have more CPU's or client nodes in your maya.rayhosts file you will receive errors during the connection phase of the renders
8. Restart Maya after any changes to the maya.rayhosts file, changes won't be recognized until you do.
9. The first test render should be a Single Frame render ran with the translation or verbose level at Progress Messages. This will provide the best information about the connection attempts and errors if any. The messages should appear in your Output Window or the Console for Mac users.
10. Connecting to client nodes of different operating systems, ie the master machine is Windows and the client machines are Mac OS X, is generally not recommended. It's best to use machines that are the same OS
