Hello,
Frist big hello to all members.....i have new configuration whit cpu-Q6600 (core 2 quad 4*2.4ghz) and gigabyte mb p32-ds4.....4gb ram memory(800mhz)...i use 3ds max 9 (sory my mistake i use 3ds max 8 )and no plugin render...just plain 3ds render...if there is any whay to emprove and get faster rendering please help.....my comp is not overclocked...so if someone could help me whit this i will me very greatfull......
Thanks in advanced....
Sory on bad english :)
Best regards,

during a render open task manager and figure out if the renderer is multi threaded...ie using all 4 cores. It may not on the default 3dds renderere ,i dont know.
DO like phil suggest, use another renderer that is multi threaded.
If using another renderer is too complexs for you , and the default renderer is siingle threaded , maybe you can open 2,3,or 4 instances of max at once and have each one render part of your animation . ???? . This is a real sloppy solution to the problem obvioulsy, as its waste of ram, might not even work, and wont help for stills.
I thought even the default renderer would be multi threaded , perhaps there is a setting to turn on multi threading.??????????????????????????????
ok...frist off all thanks for reply.......i ask this question becouse i test the same project in 3ds on two computers.......
frist computer is amd 6000+ overclocked to 10% whit 2gb ram
and second is Q6600 not overclocked whit 4gb ram (xp uses onli 3.5)
and results are the same 8 seconds to render frist frame on camera1 on resolution 640*480...
whell i whas thinking that Q6600 will have at least 30% beter results then amd 6000+.....
i put file here so u can test it and tell me how long it will take on yopuor computers and what cpu do u use.......i testit on frist frame on camera1 on resolution 640*480
P.S ........i use 3ds max8....in few days i will install 3ds 2008......
Hum, in fact there is indeed a "multithreading" check box in max (at least in max 2008 but I'm pretty sure it was here before too). By default multithreading is enabled though (you can check that in (customize -> preferences -> rendering -> multi threating (bottom left of the dialog)
Speed increase with mental ray is almost linear so if you use a quad core it should render about twice as fast as a dual (provided a "core" on your new processor is equivalent in speed to a "core" on your new one.
As an example, I went from an Athlon X2 3500 to a XQ6700 (overclockec at 3.5 Ghz) and my render speed is roughly 3 times faster with mental ray (meaning, one core on my new computer is a bit faster than one core on my older one)
In your case, the difference should be smaller since you come from a more powerful machine, but I would expect a speed increase around 1.5 to 1.8 (but I agree with everyone here, you have to test with a scene that will need at least 15 to 30 minutes to render (the initial "translation" phase in a mental ray render isn't multi-processor enabled, so on a fast render, since this phase will be a big part of your render time, you loose the benefit of having more cores)
