Distributed Rendering with Mental Ray Max 9?????

Hi all... new help with setting up distributed rendering with Mental Ray in Max 9. The one where I can use other computers to help render the same image. I activated it in the processing section but keep getting message that slaves on other machines cannot be found. Could it be error in assigning pot number? Or maybe something very obvious that I have missed. Can someone please list all neccesary steps to have it running without errors??? Need help real soon because I've got a project that's going to be a very big file and distributed rendering is the only way I'll be able to get it done in time!!! HELP SOMEONE!!! Thanks in advance.

I never used before the distributed bucket rendering in Mental Ray, but if you open the help file that come with Max Help->User Reference...
go to the section:
Rendering -> Renderers -> MentaRay 3.5 Renderer -> Mental Ray Renderer Rollout -> Distributed Bucket Rendering Rollout (Mental Ray Renderer)
and you will find all the info you need for the distribution.

Hi NMILIOTI... Thanks for the quite reply. The reference was the first place I went to check up. I've done exactly what has been written but no success at this moment. Well.. hopefully someone else who uses distributed rendering on a regular basis can help me out of this fast! Thanks.

xxzen,

Visit this link from evermotion that hosts a video of 2 minutes of how to setup with 8 cpus.
Read the thread because a lot of people are involved. Maybe you find something.

Nice information but still no luck. Still getting error message that it cannot connect to the slaves. Still trying and hoping.

xxzen,

I've installed Max 9 in a different machine and connect them together via a hub.
PC001 has the ip 10.10.10.10
PC002 has the ip 10.10.10.11

I ping both directions to ensure the connectivity.

Under the directory:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 9\MENTALRAY\SATELLITE you will find the executable "RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe".

I have installed as a service in both machines:
RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe /install
RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe /start

Last i did was to disable the firewall in both machines in order to work.
(This is a temporar solution for the situation).

From the first machine open the "Mental Ray Renderer" and in the "Processing" tab you will find
the "Distributed Bucket Rendering" rollout.

Check the "Distributed Render" checkbox.
Press the "Add" button and give the secondary IP. (In my case 10.10.10.11)
Leave the default port checkbox enabled and press "ok".

Select the "10.10.10.11 (port default)" that will apear in the listbox and press render.
If you have assigned multiple machines and want to distribute to all of them you have
to multiple-select the ip's in the list for all of them.

You don't need to open 3ds max 9 in the second machine.
From the first machine if you try to render you will see in the "render window" more bruckets and from the secondary PC a heavy cpu load from task manager.

It works fine for me.

If everything is ok, re-enable the firewall and add the 3dsmax.exe to exceptions and set the scope to "My network (subnet) only".

By running the commands in the following directory:
c:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 9\MENTALRAY\SATELLITE
There you will find the executable "RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe"

run from command prompt:
Start->Run->Cmd.exe
c:\>cd "\PROGRAM FILES\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 9\MENTALRAY\SATELLITE"

c:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 9\MENTALRAY\SATELLITE>RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe /install

c:\PROGRAM FILES\AUTODESK\3DS MAX 9\MENTALRAY\SATELLITE>RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe /start

if you open the task manager you will see then the process "RaySat_3dsmax9_32server.exe" to be running.
To ensure that is installed as a service goto Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services.
In the List you will find the installed service "RaySat_3dsmax9..." and the status if it is running or not.
