Starting my own designing business...

I need some opinions.

My friend is in music business, he started his independent record label, started a company. He's always coming to me for designs, and I've been designing for him a lot.

Recently, he told me to start my own business, sole proprietorship, then we'll work together and put our names in the market. He told me that the earlier I register my company, the better. He'll even get me clients, projects and stuffs.

Well, I got excited here, but, I have no experience in starting my own business. And, I'm going for college now, studying graphic design.

Should I listen to him, or work in a designing company for a few years, get some experience, then start my own business?

Hi

Maybe You should try to combined both beacuse in college you could learn a lot but the real world experienced is very good to have it,...
Working as a freelance is good job but you have to have good clients and make contacts for a better and future job..Dont try to get and have a lot clients but try with good ones and make them happy..

Cheers

work in a designing company for a few years would be a better option cause that way u can learn the etiquettes of a bussiness,

mostly a design college would only teach u how to design, but marketplace is very different in terms of how work is done

however if u r the daring types u can start ur own business straight, the risk is higher but there r numerous examples of people succeeding

Hi Nogol =)

Here's some great reading for you and others who want to be, or are already GFX freelancers/designers:
http://www.gfxelite.de/forum/showthr...8.html?t=62468

I especially recommend the article "Pricing Design - How to get the best rate for your work"
in DIGIT Magazine 2006 April.

Best of luck to you! :)

Freelance is tough starting out. A nice combo of bona fide experience combined with some education will go a long way.

Thanks for all your replies. Some encouragement and good advices.

I'm going to take the challenge. I'll register the business name now, try to do some side projects to build up the brand, and keep up with college work.
