Question App to turn a greyscale image into a 3d relief?

Does anyone know of a photoshop plugin / standalone app for Mac or PC that can turn a greyscale image (dark = deep / light = shallow) into a 3d relief / model ( like a coin or a medal)?

if posible something that is not so complex that its learning curve is so steep that I give up :( and continue using the emboss filter to make a representation of the 3D?

thanks!

I know 3dsom turns your images into models, it is on the front of todays gfx page, maybe this would help?

Thanks annime,

but 3dsom bases its 3d generation from taking photos of an actual , real object; :( what i'm looking for is some program that takes a flat illustration generated in the computer and maps the level of the greyscale to height in the 3d resulting model, so I can preview the result , and then readjust maybe even mill or make a real 3d object , if there only would be a machine here to do that!

There is a very interesting free application created by a Rhino user:

Code:
ZSurf: http://www.mwt.net/~sjedging/ZSURF4.zip
With ZSurf you can create IGES surfaces from bitmaps (only bitmaps!) with a very good quality.

And a little tutorial to use with Rhino!

This Rhino plug-in looks very interesting, has anyone actually tried it and if so how well did it perform?

It's a "standalone application" (a little utility :p ) that export IGES files, not a Rhino plugin. It works good, try it, doesn't requires installation!

Anyway macnut, if you can, use displacement.
