Does anyone know of a photoshop plugin / standalone app for Mac or PC that can turn a greyscale image (dark = deep / light = shallow) into a 3d relief / model ( like a coin or a medal)?
if posible something that is not so complex that its learning curve is so steep that I give up :( and continue using the emboss filter to make a representation of the 3D?
but 3dsom bases its 3d generation from taking photos of an actual , real object; :( what i'm looking for is some program that takes a flat illustration generated in the computer and maps the level of the greyscale to height in the 3d resulting model, so I can preview the result , and then readjust maybe even mill or make a real 3d object , if there only would be a machine here to do that!
This Rhino plug-in looks very interesting, has anyone actually tried it and if so how well did it perform?

It's a "standalone application" (a little utility :p ) that export IGES files, not a Rhino plugin. It works good, try it, doesn't requires installation!
I tried z surf you can find a free independent version of the program in the web page. I don?t remember the link. Do some searching with google. Try typing zsurf4.
