When it comes to modeling, I would say modo is maybe a bit more "modern" while maintaining a lightwave user in a relatively comfortable environment (a lot in common between both applications. Now, for a more general usage (modeling, animation, rendering, fx) I would say lightwave has more to offer (modo is especially good at rendering design stuff, but less powerful than lightwave when it comes to animation).
Now, if I were you I would grab a demo of each one, google for some tutorials and try by myself because it's the best way to see what is the best for you :)

I'm going to vote for Modo, but in the end it's up to you. You need to try and see which modeler is the one you enjoy working with the most and which one is THE ONE! :) Modo might be best for me but it may suck for you.

I am going to vote Lightwave. The plugins and community is huge. Fprime = love plus support for n-gons is cool. But modo does have some finer points as well. And I like the separation of modeler and layout.

But LW gets my vote.

Matching Purplepills' points

.Modo really needs to get the sdk out there, on the other hand LW needs a lot of those plugins
.From the siggraph demo it looks like fprime is now the same as modo's preivew.
support for n-gons have been in modo since day-1. LW just started supporting them in v 9.x

I used to love the seperation until I started using modo it will allow you to pretty much shut off everything but modeling if you want. You can set it up to be just like a separate modeler.

Now for LW's defense, modo is still pretty new and isn't a complete package. The Character tools can be argued to be non-existent in both. :) Modo's surfacing takes some getting used to, LW got nodes with a 3rd party plugin they bought.

Back to the original question. If the LWcad plugin is something you need go with LW. If you need anything else go with modo.

I like Lw, a lot!!!! but modo´s GUI is incredible. Newteks should work more on that. I think luxology will surprise us with animation....

I do a lot of illustration and stills. So 2 main plugins and collabs that I love is the LW plugin from Erain and Vue Xstream synch plugin. So to me I guess my question would be: "What is your motivation or end result for your models?" LW I heard is crap for animation. I haven't done much with animation so I can't tell. I guess I am the only old fart that loves LW's interface. Tho I can say it isn't the cutest one.

They both look very confusing to me. I have seen fabulous renders done in modo in a very short time, but I never could produce any such results. I wish there was a live chat forum for something for modo where I could just ask people as I work. That would have really helped. I think Luxology should make a shoutbox in their forum.
