3dsmax or c4d??

i've only time to try and learn one program, which would you try and learn if you were in my boat? my take on it so far is they seem to do the same things? but 3dsmax seems to be more widely used and seems to have more support materials, tutorials and such... advice from people who know would be much appreciated.... thanks in advance... oops newbie here just realized this is in the wrong place(should be in the 3dapps questions section) sorry about that i'll get it down in time i imagine

can't give you an advice here, dear friend. Both packages are good. But I would also choose one and focus on that. You're right about the time factor.

Pick the one you like the GUI best or you have seen the most impressive tutorial, and start working. Maybe you will use both applications anyway, be it only for conversion purposes.

Both programs are full 3D packages. You can develop, create, texture and render objects from start to end, you even have compositing tools for final blurring and grading.

Professionals also use these full packages, but often they use smaller, simpler software that is specialized in one task. For example, in one application they create the geometry, and in another application they do the shading and rendering. That way they only have to buy the software that they need, and not more.

C4D is in this regard more flexible than 3dsmax, because you can choose the modules you need and therefore lower the price of the license if you don't need all modules.

Do both 3D packages do the exact same thing? I would say yes. The choice between the two may also be influenced by the available plugins.

I believe that the thing is to be good at something and that doesn't depend on the program but on how many hours you spend on it.
As an answer to your question i would say that as far as i know 3dsmax is more known at most companies than c4d, mostly in architectural modeling.

I know both programs, and max is more powerful at modelling.
I'm migrating from max to cinema tho.

Both program are very capable and at a hobbyist level you can probably reach the same level of quality with both of them.
If you plan to use the skills you'll develop to work in a studio later, I guess 3ds max is a better choice if you're not in Europe (C4D is strong in Germany)
If you plan to become a freelancer and you know you'll have to buy the software later, then of course it's easier with Cinema 4D (in Europe price is about a third of what you would pay for Max)

C4D is easy to learn, but 3ds max renderer is better.

Truth be told, C4D's renderer can create anything that 3dsmax's can. It's about skill, not the tool in the end. I've tried 3dsmax in the not too distant past and it seems too convoluted to me. C4D can create images/models as nice as the other packages. It just uses different means to do it. I also believe that C4D is more intuitive, but this is all my opinion.
