extended desktop on macbook (pro)?

I want to move to Mac but can I use an external display and have the desktop span both screens like on a PC-laptop? Does this work on MacBook and/or MacBookPro?

BTW, the display is a 19" LCD I use on the PC ... native resolution is 1280x1024

thx
