i just switched to a mac, and need some help

so i just bought my new macbook and uploaded and installed all of the updates, but for some reason when i open up my garageband, when i try to record my computer freezes on me. is there a alt+control+delete function on a mac?? because i have to hold down the power button to shut it off. i contacted apple care and they told me that they werent sure but that another update was coming out shortly, to hold off and update my macbook again.
if anyone has any answers, please help

Yeah, if you have 512Mb RAM, I suggest you to upgrade to more RAM. GarageBand takes alot of RAM.

If your mouse is still working (not frozen)
right clic on garageband's icon in the dock then choose "force to quit."

you can also use in apple menu on left top the "force to quit" option and choose the right application.

specs

it is a core2duo macbook, with 2 512mb of ram, i just bought not too long ago so i dont have much information stored. oh yeah to Frosch, the computer does allow me to move the mouse around, but it would not allow me to click or open any other apps. and thanks for the hotkey, ill memorize that.
so it is 1gig ram. i guess i could just stop using garageband right?
(oh yeah, garage band did work before, so i am puzzled at why it does this)

which updates did you install ? any 3rd party hardware drivers, fonts or similar stuff that might leave anything in system ? any probs with the firmware update maybe ? and did you fix permissions after updating ?
if the issue occured after the automatic system update you could also try to download and install the latest universal 10.4.8 intel updater from apples website. and last but not least: delete the garageband and system preferences from user/library/preferences and restart your computer.

You don't hve any demo plug ins installed, do you? Had a similar problem on my wife's G4 Powerbook, turned out it was an old plug in demo that was out of date. Removed that and GargeBand worked again.

so far you should delete the preference files only, means com.apple.garageband.cs, com.apple.garageband.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist from user/library/preferences folder and then restart to get the mac to build fresh ones. fix permissions means: open applications/utilities/disk utilities, click once on the macintosh hd symbol in the left side pannel of the window and chose fix permissions from the main window. should be done after major installations or updates to avoid errors due to messed up read/write permissions.
