C4D is a good choice, although I can't help you there with character animation, as I have never done it in C4D. But it is very popular, and there are dedicated C4D forums with lots of resources.
And you're right, there's also XSI, probably one of the most powerful packages. I installed it once, and I found it very challenging. I believe that the game half life has been created with XSI, and looking at the remarkable character and lip-sync animations, it must be very good.
It doesn't hurt to install more than one 3D package and try them out. Suddenly you get addicted to one.

because I found it nice and easy rather than the rest applications but there is softimage I didnt see it I downloading it now to see it
