a question regarding drawing..

There is a question which has been constantly arising in my mind every now and then and i have decided to put it up over here. So here it goes.

I have been hearing from a lot of people that to be a good graphic designer, you have to be good at drawing as well.

Is there any truth in this ? Want to hear what you guys have to say about this.

Of course it is true. A designer must develop a feeling of form, and probably the best way to learn this is with a simple pen and a piece of paper.

I agree with Phil999.

I think it goes well beyond the concept of form. Good drawing skills are the very foundation of any graphics work that goes beyond the basic geometrical shapes.

You just can't fake drawing skills. Any kind of art form needs the talent of technique and talent to make it "work", whether abstract, realistic, or just "jackson pollack" splashes.

I don`t agree, I`ve seen people at the university I`m studying who are really good in graphic design allthough they draw really childish. These two things don`t come near often: drawing - graphic design. One is referring to an artistic manually obtained skill, and the other is realized on the computer. Even if you`re good at drawing doesn`t mean you`ll find the computer is such a good tool and viceversa. So, I`m saying: take a look at the entire graphic content of the web - how many of the designers that this "content" do you think they know to draw (well)? They just don`t have much to do one with the other, are like two different senses: like smell and taste.

I agree, even when I'm contradicting my statement above. But it is true that some skilled CG artists don't draw very well with a pencil. Indeed, flash is quite different than working with tempera.

But I would recomment a real-world drawing and painting education for CG artists who are more interested in the artistic aspect.

I agree. Even 3d modeling, digital painting, photoshop processing takes drawing skills. i personally CAN and LIKE to draw in crayon. Couldn't think of going here without being able to draw.

Take artistic courses if you can. If not, you can still pick up a pen, look at something and start drawing. 2-3 years ago I couldn't draw humans for example, but now I can. I learned.

Man, drawing skills are ESSENTIAL for graphics :)

I guess you will generally get the same answer in this thread, i also do feel drawing is essential in the creative industry, what better ways to illustrate ur ideas on paper than trying to verbally describe it to your client. A picture says thousand words =D

As i can guess you are not good at drawing?!
You think you can not be good designer?!

No need to be afraid, drawing is just another way of showing creativity.
I am studying architecture where many students at the beginning draw badly.

After some period they start to develop their drawing skills, i mean they got knowledge about perspective, scaling, coloring techniques etc.
After that they become very professional at drawing.

I have been learned that talent is 10% , another 90% is hard working and will for developing!
