Sure it's true! With good drawing skills You can be more succesful in gfx with less work.

Drawing is a way to understand the world. It trains your view for the essential. Of course not every designer is good at drawing - doesn't have to be. For example, when you draw a thing - wether it may be a spoon or a human - you try to catch its essence. You can do it by painting three hours in a row, or by drawing a few black lines in thirty seconds. Both is right. And a technically perfect painting is not to be confused with good design.
