Good choice! If you can find any or all of the 4 3D Fluff Training DVD's, those are great. I got all 4 volumes with eMule Plus several months ago. Also the Lynda.com Cinema 4D essentials training appears to be pretty good at a glance. I nabbed that with uTorrent.
The 3D Fluff videos are fantastic, but if you do by chance want some reading material I highly suggest "3D Modeling with Cinema 4D R9" written by Tony Alley. It's the best book I have read for people just starting out in modeling. Here's a link for that book

Personally, I find Softimage|XSI by far the most able 3D package out there. Granted, there's a bit of a learning curve, but once you master it...you'll never look back.
I've been working professionally with XSI, Maya, and C4D, and I can tell you that from my own experiences.
There are a few good books on XSI out there. A good one to start with is "Softimage XSI 5 - The official guide" by Anthony Rossano.
That being said, certain aspects of C4D are definitely more approachable - especially if this is your first foray into the 3D world. Texturing for example, is a lot more straightforward with C4D.
For starters, I can recommend the book "3D modelling with Cinema 4D R9". It's part of the exploring series of books, published by Thomson publishing.
And another thing...price wise...you can get a full version of XSI for $495...less than what you'd pay for the equivalent of maya or C4D.
The best thing is to download the learning versions of those packages, play with them for a while, and then decide which workflow suits you best.
Or sign up for a course in a school, if that's an option.
C4D is the way to go if you?re as clueless as me. Through the years i've installed and uninstalled all the major programs until C4D suddenly just clicked. Trust the advice, the Fluff-videos rule.
