Yes, there`s significant amount of delay when the program intialize/loading the viewport, we cant do nothing about it. There`s already a thread about this problem in cgsociety, something about how max 2009 handle the viewport, including anti aliasing etc, that`s suspected as the culprit. I dont know if the problem still persist if we use quadro card, i use 8800 gts. This really bug me, because until 2008, vieport loading is a breeze.
Yes, its really annoying, I thought this would have been adressed in SP1, but no luck.
Changing from Direct3D to OpenGl makes no difference, either.
Maybe its just me, but somhow, Max (first Kinetix, then Discreet , now Autodesk) and especially Maya (former Alias Wavefront, then Alias, now Autodesk too) somehow changed from Apps with 'heart and character' to soulles Industry Products.
Just my 2 cents.

Indeed! That seems to happen around Autodesk a lot. But it is not clear to me why you need to use Max 2009. Does it really have anything much different? Is it really worth the lag and irritation?

Naah, I don't think so...
I installed it on Vista ultimate 32bit stripped version and the interface popped up pretty fast, but the viewports took a lil time to show the grids and become operable.
I use QuadCore 3.0 GHz Xeon with 4 GB Corsair and just one 8600GT
IMHO, that loading will not speed up with quadro. Quadro is for displaying huge amount of geometry efficienty. When there is no geometry to be moved, rotated, scaled, real time shaded, Quadro practically has no role to play.
