I've had both of them installed for some time now and oly today, they both reported an error (license status [1.0.0010]). I amd then asked to activate the product and so I ran the keygen, copied the request code to it, calculated the activation code and pasted that in, then hit next.
All seemed okay, when I got the dialog thanking me for activating the product and a note to say where the information had been stored.
Only when I click continue a few seconds later I get the same error.
Any help getting this fixed/sorted would be much appreciated
Make sure Max doesn't go online and try registering again.

Well, you can try this :
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Software Licenses\,
and delete the *.dat file in there (the file name is usually in the form of hexadecimal numbers, and only 1 file is in that folder).
Then run max again, it'll ask you for a license/activation again. Reactivate.
This worked for me in the past.

Yes, that`s a never ending looping registry error nightmare, i encounter the same problem when i connect a harddisk which had a copy of 3dsmax installed in there (it`s my friends system disk). When i try to open 3dsmax when the harddisk is plugged in, the license error appears, even after i unplug the harddisk, the error still appearing, so i delete the *.dat file in the directory sheishirou tell, and then run the registration again, and all is good after it.
So my advice is make sure you don`t run 3dsmax if there`s a disk with another 3dsmax is installed, because maybe the progz will search another license of it and make the whole thing messed up. (but installing various version of 3dsmax in the same system is ok).
Well after copying the 4 .dat files elsewhere just for safety, I renamed them all to .dax. Then I ran max 2008 and max 2009 and reactivated them. SUCCESS.
Now I know which two are for Max 2008 and 2009, I've made a note and renamed the other two back to .dat.
