Basically, if you're a mental ray user you will probably want to use the latest version of max since it evolves a lot with each new version. If, like it seems to be the case here you are purely a vray user then you'll be able to use version 9 or 2008 without loosing many functionalities (in fact, version 9 has an advantage, the fastest viewport draw speed)

i'll recommend the latest version...
we recently bought some 3d libraries but could not open them as they were made with max 2009, and we are still not there...
sometimes it's good to stay with the latest version, the only prob is that sometimes plugins take time to catch on...

definitely max 2009, but don't wait too long because you'll have to throw in 2010 as an option.
